Itinerary

Itinerary
Itinerary:
Zürich

Day 1 | Arrival in Zurich

You arrive into Zürich Hauptbahnhof, Europe's largest terminus, and step out onto one of the world's most liveable cities. Check in to FIVE Hotel Zurich, a sleek design landmark a short walk from the lake and the boutique shopping of Bahnhofstrasse. In the evening, walk down to the lakefront and dine at one of the elevated terraces along the Quais, watching the Alps fade to silhouettes on the horizon. Zurich is not just a transit city, it is a city worth arriving in.

Bürgenstock

Day 2 | Bürgenstock Resort

A car transfers you south-west along the lake and up to Bürgenstock, a private peninsula 500 metres above Lake Lucerne, accessible only by funicular. The resort is a world unto itself: five hotels, twenty restaurants, and a 10,000 m² cliff spa carved into the rock face. Your afternoon belongs to the Alpine Spa: the infinity pool appears to pour directly into the lake below, treatment rooms are cut from the mountainside, and a private terrace is yours for the aperitivo hour. Dinner at the resort's signature restaurant, with the Alps turning gold behind the windows.

Day 3 | Bürgenstock · A Day at Your Own Pace

A day entirely your own. Walk the Felsenweg cliff path, a 30-minute trail that traces the sheer mountain face and rewards you with views most visitors only see from boats far below. Alternatively, take the historic funicular to the peak tower, or book a morning treatment and spend the rest of the day in the outdoor thermal pools. Bürgenstock rewards the unhurried guest. This is the simple luxury of having nowhere to be.

St. Moritz

Day 4 | The Albula Line to St. Moritz

A private car collects you after breakfast and follows the lake and the Walensee corridor to Chur, Switzerland's oldest town. There the Albula line takes over: a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of spiral tunnels and stone viaducts that climbs through the gorge, stone, pine, sudden light, and delivers you to the Engadin. The air sharpens noticeably at 1,800 metres. Check in to the Kulm Hotel, where Alpine winter tourism was born in 1856, step onto the terrace, and watch the lake turn gold.

Day 5 | St. Moritz · Lakes & Mountains

St. Moritz at altitude is simultaneously glamorous and wild, a playground of frozen lakes and designer boutiques at 1,800 metres. A morning walk around the Engadin lake offers wide valley views and the kind of clean air that resets you completely. The afternoon belongs to the Kulm Spa: heated outdoor pool, hammam, and a signature Alpine massage. For the more adventurous, the cable car to Muottas Muragl lifts you above the valley for a panorama stretching from Maloja to Pontresina. The evening is St. Moritz village at its most elegant.

The Glacier Express, St. Moritz to ZermattEight hours in reserved first class, lunch served at your seat on the world's slowest express.
Zermatt

Day 6 | Glacier Express to Zermatt

This is the day the journey becomes legendary. Board the Glacier Express in St. Moritz and settle into a window seat for eight hours on the world's slowest express. The landscape does not pass, it performs: lunch is served in the panoramic car as the Landwasser Viaduct arches sixty-five metres over the gorge, then the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 metres, meadows, glaciers, light on water. You arrive in car-free Zermatt in electric silence and take the private tunnel lift up to the Omnia, a rock hotel with rooms cantilevered over the valley on glass. The Omnia does not compete with the Matterhorn, it presents it.

Day 7 | The Gornergrat at First Light

The morning belongs to the Gornergrat. The cog railway leaves Zermatt at first light and climbs east to 3,089 metres, the Matterhorn in the window the whole way. Twenty-eight four-thousand-metre peaks stand in a single panorama at the top, the Gorner Glacier below. Coming down we stop at Rotenboden for the Riffelsee, the small lake that holds the Matterhorn's reflection, the photograph everyone knows. The rest of the day is yours, for the Omnia's spa or simply for the village. And if your dates fall on one of the few summer evenings when the mountain opposite serves dinner at 3,883 metres, I will arrange it: three courses at the highest restaurant in Europe, the sun dropping behind the Italian Alps as the Matterhorn's shadow stretches to the horizon. Ask me when we set your dates and I will tell you whether it can be done.

The GoldenPass Panoramic, to MontreuxThe vine terraces of the Lavaux and the shore of Lake Geneva through panoramic glass.
Montreux

Day 8 | Lake Geneva & the Fairmont

North out of the Valais and along the shore of Lake Geneva, the vine terraces of the Lavaux UNESCO World Heritage Site rising from the water on your left. You arrive in Montreux by early afternoon. The Fairmont Le Montreux Palace has stood on this lakefront since 1906, the grande dame of the Swiss Riviera, and your room looks across the water to the Savoy Alps. Afternoon tea on the lakeside terrace, then the evening is yours: the promenade runs seven kilometres to the Château de Chillon, and the old town is ten minutes on foot.

Interlaken

Day 9 | The GoldenPass Express to Interlaken

A slow morning on the Riviera. The Château de Chillon rises straight out of the lake twenty minutes along the shore, the water fortress that Byron carved his name into, and there is time for it properly rather than at a coach's pace. Then the GoldenPass Express north from Montreux, climbing out of the vineyards through the Simmental valley to Interlaken, where the Victoria-Jungfrau awaits: the most iconic hotel in the Alps.

Day 10 | Interlaken & Departure

The Jungfrau massif fills the window before you are fully awake, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in one unbroken wall of ice and rock. A final morning at the Grand Spa: the outdoor pool steams in the cool mountain air. A late breakfast on the terrace, then the train east to Zurich, two hours through the Bernese Oberland, arriving at the same station where the journey began. You leave with a different kind of Switzerland inside you: not the postcard version, but the real one, felt in the bone.
